Dutch vocabulary

Literature.

Dutch is often perceived as a “hard-sounding” language. And honestly, I understand why. The pronunciation can seem harsh at first, and compared to languages like French, Italian or Spanish, Dutch may not immediately sound very melodic.

But once you begin to understand the language more deeply, something changes.

In my opinion, the real beauty of Dutch starts to reveal itself when you reach a higher level of fluency, around the C1 level. That is when you begin to notice the nuance, humour, expressiveness, and richness hidden within the language. Certain words and expressions suddenly carry a depth that is difficult to translate directly into other languages.

On this page, you will find a collection of C1-level Dutch words, idioms, and expressions that, to me, truly capture the character and richness of the Dutch language. These are the kinds of words that make Dutch feel alive, subtle, and surprisingly elegant.

This page is a work in progress. Over time, I will continue adding new words, explanations, interactive quizzes, and exercises to help you practise and become more familiar with advanced Dutch vocabulary.
